Man Awaiting Murder Trial Ate Ajax, Died

A man ate cleanser that he apparently collected slowly while in custody and died while awaiting trial in the killings of four homeless men and two others, his lawyer said.

The lawyer, Michael Molfetta, who was briefed on the death, said Friday that the incident raises serious questions about Orange County jail deputies' supervision of Itzcoatl Ocampo, who was mentally ill.

Ocampo, a 25-year-old former Marine, was found shaking and vomiting in his single-man cell Wednesday and taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead a day later, sheriff's Lt. Jeff Hallock said.

No cause of death was immediately given, and officials said an autopsy will be performed in the coming days, but Molfetta said investigators believe Ocampo waited until he accumulated enough Ajax industrial cleaner for a lethal dose, then ingested it.  More

New Hampshire – A traveling medical technician was sentenced Monday to 39 years in prison for stealing painkillers and infecting dozens of patients in four states with hepatitis C through tainted syringes.

David Kwiatkowski, 34, was a cardiac technologist in 18 hospitals in seven states before being hired at New Hampshire’s Exeter Hospital in 2011.

He had moved from job to job despite being fired at least four times over allegations of drug use and theft.

Since his arrest last year, 46 people have been diagnosed with the same strain of hepatitis C he carries.

Kwiatkowski admitted stealing painkillers and replacing them with saline-filled syringes tainted with his blood. More

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A shopper is suing Macy's for $1 million over being handcuffed and thrown into a jail cell at the retail chain's flagship store in Manhattan two days after last year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The plaintiff, Rachid Bakhari, said the incident started when he tried to return an ill-fitting belt he had bought for $27, according to a lawsuit filed on Monday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.

Because the shopper had removed the price tags at home, he followed a sales clerk's instructions to get a belt with tags intact from the sales rack and bring it to the cash register to finalize the return, the lawsuit said.

Suddenly he was handcuffed by security personnel who tossed him into the store's jail cell, where he was held for three hours, the suit said.  More

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A 24-year-old man is facing multiple charges after breaking into his family home and assaulting his father while the man held the suspect’s own 1-year-old son.

Officers were called to the Hass Street home just before 4:30 a.m. after getting reports of a man who was being assaulted by his adult son.

The suspect’s father tells KDKA that he was in fear for his life and for his other family members inside the house, and had to make a quick decision to stop his son from hurting anyone else.

Police spent hours this morning at the house in the 1400-block of Haas Street where 24-year-old Marcus Jones allegedly broke in and attacked his own father.

“I don’t want to shoot my son. I love my son,” said Horace Durham, Jr., the suspect’s father. “Pushed me to a point where I, um, I was taking so many blows I wasn’t able to defend myself.”  More

Carla Rae Hague, 71, is sitting in a jail cell next to the courthouse where her husband is a judge. She is accused of poisoning her husband, Judge Charles Hague, with antifreeze.

Hague, a retired nurse who has been married to the judge for 45 years, has been charged with felonious assault and is expected to be charged with attempted murder and possible tampering with evidence, the Ashtabula County Sheriff told ABCNews.com.

According to the Sheriff’s office, Judge Hague was brought to a hospital in Ashtabula County on Sept. 15 and life flighted that same day to the Cleveland Clinic. Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department received a phone call from members of the Hague family on Sept. 19 to file a complaint when it was found from hospital tests that high levels of ethylene glycol, better known as antifreeze, was found in the judge’s body.

“The investigation found that Judge Hague had been intentionally poisoned,” a statement from the sheriff’s office said.  More

She was just a ho: Sick bid by killer’s lawyer

In a bizarre courtroom speech, a Queen defense attorney said the life of a murdered transgender prostitute wasn’t worth much — and argued that her convicted killer shouldn’t be punished as if he had killed someone “in the higher end of the community.”

“A sentence of 25 years to life is an incredibly long period of time judge,” John Scarpa said Thursday as he asked a judge to go easy on his client, Rasheen Everett, for killing hooker Amanda Gonzalez-Andujar in 2010.

“Shouldn’t that be reserved for people who are guilty of killing certain classes of individuals?”

Then, taking callousness to a new level, he said: “Who is the victim in this case? Is the victim a person in the higher end of the community?”  More

UK - A cousin of an honor killing victim who helped dispose of her body has said he is proud of his actions.

Banaz Mahmod (pictured), 20, was strangled to death with a shoelace by her father and uncle in her south London home, seven years ago.

Her cousin Dana Amin, now 29, helped put the young woman's body in a suitcase and transported it to the Midlands before burying it in a make-shift grave in a Birmingham back-garden.

As he was sentenced to eight years in prison, Amin told Southwark Crown Court he did not regret his actions.

Iraq-born Banaz was murdered by members of her family because she walked out of an arranged marriage and fell in love with another man.

Her father, Mahmod Mahmod, and uncle, Ari Mahmod, were jailed for life in 2007, after being found guilty of what has become Britain’s most notorious honor killing.  More

NEWARK, New Jersey (Reuters) - Police on Monday were seeking a pair of suspected carjackers who shot to death a lawyer who was Christmas shopping with his wife at a high-end New Jersey mall and then fled in the couple's luxury SUV, prosecutors said.

The couple had walked out of the Mall at Short Hills in Millburn, New Jersey, at about 9:10 p.m. EST on Sunday (0210 GMT on Monday) and headed for the parking deck, where the man opened the door of their 2012 silver Range Rover for his wife. As he approached the driver's door, he was confronted by a gunman, said Thomas Fennelly, chief assistant prosecutor for Essex County.

After the shooting, the gunman and an accomplice fled in the Range Rover. The car was found on Monday parked on a street in Newark, about 10 miles from the scene of the killing, acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said in a statement.  More Watch Video at Nutty Videos

Nevada - A woman who was acquitted of murder after killing her ex-husband more than 20 years ago in South Florida is now facing charges of trying to kill her adult son — with the same gun.

Prosecutors in Las Vegas want a jury there to learn about the trial Linda Cooney won in 1993, when she was accused in the Feb. 7, 1992 shooting death of prominent Palm Beach County tax attorney James Cooney.

The testimony of Kevin Cooney, 11 at the time of the trial, was key to his mother's acquittal, according to Peter Magrino, the prosecutor who tried the case. James and Linda Cooney had divorced four years earlier, and she claimed she acted in self-defense when she shot him.  More

BOSTON (CBS) — It is being called the perfect crime and it has law enforcement around the globe baffled.

It all starts with a simple email.

“They are scared and they are angry. It is a real terrible experience for them.”

Joe Ruthaford is talking about computer users who mistakenly launched a potent internet phishing scheme.

He recently saw one of those ravaged computers in his Beacon Hill repair shop.

“It is extremely damaging. It is one of the worst ones.”

It’s called cryptolocker ransomware.

Kevin Swindon is with the FBI in Boston.

“I would think about this particular type of malware as what would happen if your computer was destroyed,” Swindon said.  More
